This mural tryptic includes three installments in the Czech Village. The design is inspired by the historic arts and cultural district rooted in Czech and Slovak heritage. Wildlife elements included are native to both Iowa and the Czech Republic with a modern spin on Alphonse Mucha’s style, famous Czech art nouveau painter and illustrator detailed with traditional folk textile patterns. Woven Blooms tells the story of the Czech Village culture through nature, art, textiles and architecture in a joyful collage to complete the trio of designs as a set. Each element included was intentionally selected to showcase national and local symbolism and representation.

This piece was commissioned by Amherst, a real estate company with headquarters in Austin, Texas and Heredia, Costa Rica. The design captures a sense of place through iconic imagery representing life, landscape and culture with a sunrise in Austin, sunset in Costa Rica and Amherst organizational values (homes, families) at the center connecting the two locations.

Costa Rica imagery: [unofficial] slogan of Costa Rica “Pura Vida”, Irazu volcano, sloth, rainforest treeline, waterfall, coffee plant red-eyed tree frog, hibiscus flower, keel-billed toucan, tropical palms, carreta (traditional oxcart wheel) and a lotus flower o symbolize a third office in India.

This mural celebrates all things Kansas City – baseball, BBQ, and fountains. Since its formation in 1838, the city has been the home to two prominent baseball teams (Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Baseball League and Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals); more than 100 barbecue restaurants; and over 200 fountains, giving it the nickname “City of Fountains.” The wavy line that cuts through the design represents the Missouri River. Iconic thematic imagery includes Royals and Monarchs players, J.C. Nichols Memorial Fountain monuments, picnic tablecloth, grill, home plate, spatula, poker, bat, baseball, flags, field pattern, Kauffman stadium fountain and wavy line throughout to represent the Missouri River.

It’s on the side of an airplane hangar that’s visible to the public from Riverside Drive (a 45 mph road about 100 feet away from the hangar) so the vibrancy and simplicity of the design was intentional.

This design is uplifting and vibrant with visuals symbolizing empowering themes of capableness and meaningful relationships including a child sitting on the shoulders of a parent or grandparent, a butterfly flying upward and a burst of sunrise, sky and flowers to overall represent living a flourishing, fulfilling life. The word “CAPABLE” is shown in braille inside the yellow sun. An intentional use of bold, high-contrasting colors is used so that those with low or only some vision might witness it.

The design encourages people to relax and take time out of one’s busy schedule to enjoy the beauty of life with a deeper appreciation of the world around us.

The flowers included are native to Latin America, “Soñar” is Spanish for “to dream” and the butterflies signify the migration monarchs make from Canada to Mexico each Fall. The mural will celebrate and symbolize the migration and journey many Latinos make to America, specifically to Marshalltown’s community.

In collaboration with Downtown Partners, inspiration for this mural drew from the historical nature of the area it resides in; the Fourth Street Historic District. The mural showcases some of Sioux City’s most iconic landmarks including the Grandview Band Shell and Rose Gardens, Floyd Monument, Railroad Museum Locomotive, Woodbury County Courthouse, War Eagle, Missouri River and Veterans Memorial Bridge. The mural utilizes contemporary design to represent Siouxland’s blossoming community while honoring the area’s vibrant history and adding aesthetic value to the district in an exciting way.

This collage of blossoming greenery represent growths of the new development, bursting with iconic imagery found in The District at Prairie Trail including restaurants, breweries, shopping as well as the Ankeny community. The message “Wish you were here” draws in viewers for a photo-op.

This design celebrates McKinley with a burst of math, science, art, sports, music, diversity and school pride including florals to represent nature and blossoming young minds, a butterfly to symbolize students’ transformation as they progress from grade to grade, hand prints around the globe to capture diversity and student participation and thought bubbles (white circles) for curious minds and thinking to connect it all together.

Throughout my time on-site, I spoke with each art class (preschool - 5th grade) about life as an artist and the mural process. The preschoolers shared their talents by adding their handprints to the mural. Another fun interactive component of this project was that kiddos also got their own copy of the mural design to color in art class.

This project sparked encouragement, inspiration and a positive experience amongst the staff and students to to see art appreciated and lift people up.

Solheim Cup Community Art Project

Selected as one of 17 local artists to collaborate with sponsoring organizations to promote the 2017 Solheim Cup, an international women's golf tournament. The installations were on display through the Des Moines Art Route, on the West Des Moines Art Pocket and at the event at Des Moines Golf and Country Club.
